who we are

The Explorist is a podcast about the outdoors: how we change it, and how it changes us. We bring you stories from places where people and the wild collide, and the friction summons something strange and new. Each episode visits the Earth’s weirdest corners, whether that’s in your backyard or in the back of beyond.

The Explorist is the project of Ted and Jeff Alvarez.

Ted is a National Magazine Award-winning adventure travel journalist with over a decade of experience in the field with publications like Backpacker, Outside Magazine, Grist, Crosscut, Men's Health, Skiing, Alaska Airlines' Beyond, Air Canada's En Route, and many other publications. He is the author of The National Parks Coast To Coast: 100 Best Hikes and The Survival Hacker's Handbook: How To Survive With Just About Anything

Jeff is a sound engineer with over a decade of experience in studio, live, field, and soundtrack recordings including an NPR: All Things Considered test-segment, theme composition for Scientific American’s The Monitor and Backpacker Magazine Survival Video Series, as well as audio sweetening for Grist.org. He also plays music with Cold SodaMedicine Bows, and Deep Creep, among many others.

And yes, they are brothers.
